Paxilis a brand name for paroxetine, a synthetic version of the neurotransmitter serotonin known as 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT). It is also used to treat depression. Paxil is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) and is the only SSRI approved for this purpose. It has the same effect as SSRIs, paroxetine, and its generic equivalent, sertraline, and is the only one to have been approved to treat depression in adults.
Paxil is approved in the United Kingdom for the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder. It is also approved for the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder in adults. Paxil has a long half life. It is recommended that patients take a minimum of 60 days for full response to Paxil, at which time they should consult a healthcare professional for proper dosing. The recommended starting dose is 10 mg, taken orally once a day, starting on the 25th day of the dosing schedule. The recommended dosage range for paroxetine is 20 to 30 mg per day. The recommended starting dose for selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) is 20 mg/day. The maximum daily dose is 300 mg. The recommended starting dose for antidepressants is 30 mg/day.
